Great Music = GUARANTEED Boot Camp Success

As you all know our entire group training system is automated to sound and music.

It's not just to make our lives easier and allow us to work with an unlimited number of clients per session to best leverage time and maximize profits.

It's not just to allow us to eliminate the burden of being a prisoner to your stopwatch so that you can focus on coaching and motivating your clients in order to bring that 1-on-1 personal attention to your large group workouts.

It's not just because you separate yourself from the competition with a music training system that you will become known for.

In fact, it is scientifically proven over and over again that the right music increases workout consistency, performance, and motivation.

Music and exercise

The topic of music and running has raised much debate on our forum here at Running 4 Women. There's little doubt that certain types of music are more suitable than others, but why is this? In this article Dr Karageorghis, a respected Sports and Exercise Psychologist discusses the issues

This article has been inspired by six years of doctoral research in which I found that the "right" music can have a very positive impact on sport and exercise performance. I am grateful to the Academy for cultivating my interest in the area of psychophysical responses to music during my master's programme in 1991/92. I am also pleased to be invited to share my findings with you, the coaches and fitness professionals.

How Does Music Aid Athletic Performance?

A review of this area (Karageorghis & Terry, 1997) based on ameta-analytic study I conducted at the Academy, revealed four main ways which music may aid performance in sport and exercise. First, during submaximal repetitive exercise such as running, music can narrow a performer's attention and as a consequence, divert attention away from sensations of fatigue. This is a technique which many marathon runners and triathletes refer to as dissociation, i.e., focusing on stimuli unrelated to the task such as the surroundings or conducting mental arithmetic. Effective dissociation tends to promote a positive mood state through the avoidance of thoughts that relate to the fatigue component of mood.

Second, music alters arousal levels and can therefore be used as a form of stimulant prior to competition or as a sedative to calm over-anxious athletes (see Karageorghis, Drew, & Terry, 1996). One of the interventions I often use involves the production of audio cassettes containing stimulative music combined with verbal suggestions as a psych-up strategy. Similarly, I use sedative music as a backdrop for relaxation techniques that are administered via verbal instruction.

Third, music is beneficial as a result of the similarities between rhythm and human movement; hence, the synchronization of music with exercise consistently demonstrates increased levels of work output among exercise participants (see Karageorghis & Terry, 1997, for review). Fourth, inrelation to the previous point, the rhythmical qualities of music also emulate patterns of physical skills; therefore, music can enhance the acquisition of motor skills and create a better learning environment. There is evidence from both gymnastics and swimming in support of this (Chen, 1985; Jernberg, 1981).

Selecting the "Right" Music

Our recent work (Karageorghis, Terry, & Lane, 1997) indicates that there are four key factors that influence the motivational qualities of music. First, owing to the fact that people have an underlying predisposition to react to rhythmical stimuli, the Rhythmic Response to the music is the most salient factor. Second, the melodic and harmonic aspects of music shape the listener's interpretation and influence mood state. I refer to this factor as Musicality. Third, the Cultural Impact of music will influence the listener's response through socio-cultural upbringing and previous exposure to music. Fourth, the Association factor which relates to the extra-musical associations evoked by music, i.e., sound can promote sounds that inspire physical activity. The Rhythmic Response and Musicality factors are internal to the composition of music, whereas the Cultural Impact and Association factors are external to the music relating to personal interpretation of music (see Figure 1). Our research shows that the internal factors are more important in predicting how a person will respond to a piece of music than the external factors.

We have developed and validated a questionnaire to rate the motivational qualities of music which is called the Brunel Music Rating Inventory (BMRI: Karageorghis et al., 1997). For a piece of music to truly inspire the listener, it must have strong rhythmic qualities that match the activity at hand and also a tempo which matches the predicted heart rate. The melody and harmony of the music should promote a positive mood state; that is, they should energize the listener and increase vigor. The music should also stem from the listener's socio-cultural background and comply with their preferences. Finally, it is ideal that for the music to be associated with physical activity either through the lyrics, e.g., Work Your Body!, or its association with other media such as film or TV. A classic example of such a track would be Survivor's "Eye of the Tiger", which was a theme from the Rocky series.

There are three additional considerations when selecting music:

a) Variety in the music tends to maintain athletes' interest in the activity;

b) the volume of the music should not be obscured by the noise of the exercise environment.

c) if synchronizing music with exercise, the tempo must concur with the preferred work rate. For example, if you are swimming using the breaststroke at a rate of 100 strokes per minute, it would be sensible to use music playing at 100 beats per minute (bpm). Alternatively, breast stroking at a rateof 60 strokes per minute a tempo of 120 bpm can be used as the swimmer can take one stroke every two beats.

Music and Flow State

Our most recent research (Karageorghis & Terry, 1998) has revealed an interesting link between music and the attainment of flow state during aerobic dance exercise. Flow involves an altered state of awareness during physical activity in which the mind and body function on "auto-pilot" with minimal conscious effort. Some coaches refer to this as being "in the zone"; it is an almost trance-like or hypnotic state. Flow has been associated with optimal psychological state and represents complete enjoyment of and immersion in physical activity. Our study involved 1,231 aerobic dance participants who were asked to rate the motivational qualities of the music used during a class on completion of their workout using the BMRI. They also rated flow using the Flow State Scale, a 36 item questionnaire developed by Jackson and Marsh (1996). The results revealed avery significant association between ratings of music and ratings of flow. We concluded that music may have a considerable effect on enjoyment levels during exercise an selecting the "right" music may be a key factor in maintaining adherence to exercise.

Conclusion

Music is an often untapped source of both motivation and inspiration for sport and exercise participants. One important point to remember is that musical preference is very personal indeed; that is the reason for which I have avoided suggesting which music you should prescribe for your athletes and exercise participants. That is entirely your decision. However, you should now be aware of some factors that make listening to music more rewarding in sport and exercise settings. Happy listening!

Halloween Can Kill Your Diet

September 24, 2008- Local Milwaukee fat loss expert BJ Gaddour, CSCS, has information that every dieter needs to know: Halloween is when the holiday weight gain really starts. While the month of December is typically blamed for holiday weight gain, Gaddour warns those wanting to lose weight that thanks to Halloween the pounds actually start to get packed on in late October. “The amount of eats and treats that people consume is alarming,” Gaddour was quoted as saying. “One of the main problems is the smaller ‘snack sizes’ that the candy manufacturers have made available. Eating several ‘mini’ chocolate bars is something people see as ‘ok’ because of their smaller size. In other words, it becomes a lot easier to convince yourself to indulge in these gut-swelling goodies and then you end up eating even more than before!”

Gaddour recommends the following three figure-saving tips he has used with great success with his own clients for keeping the pounds off while still allowing for the occasional Halloween treat during pumpkin season:

He states: “Our brains are wired to crave the sugar-laded treats that typify the Halloween season. So, our approach has been to take the exact opposite approach with our clients. Instead of using Halloween as a reason to justify eating a bunch of junk food we spin the seasonal event to spice up our boot camp workouts by using pumpkin exercises. Halloween thus becomes a fat loss tool for us and our clients- this approach is key to adopting a healthy lifestyle for long-term success.”

How To Run A FREE Halloween Boot Camp Event To Generate Massive Leads And Publicity!

Hey Pros,

Yep, I know it might seem to early to start thinking about putting on a special Halloween event for your boot camps, but it's actually the ideal time to start planning it all out!

Here's my very own ACTION checklist to running a special Halloween Boot Camp open to the general public to generate crazy leads and publicity for my Get Sexy Boot Camps in Milwaukee, Wisconsin:

1.) Announce FREAKY FAT LOSS Halloween Boot Camp Event at least a month before the event to be scheduled on Friday, October 17th. The event will consist of a special workout using pumpkins and having clients dressed in Halloween costumes. There will also be a special Halloween-Themed Workout Muse audio interval training soundtrack to further cater to the seasonal favorite (I will be making this available for purchase so you can do the same for your boot camps very soon, so stay posted!). Plus, we're going to have a healthy Halloween recipe buffet to follow the event (we'll provide a list of approved recipes for our current clients to bring) to show how to creatively stay on track with fat loss goals during this fat-gaining holiday!

2.) The event will be open the general public for FREE. We will be writing weekly press releases about the event for both our general fitness boot camps and also our senior fitness program to hopefully generate some free publicity. Look Outside The Fitness Industry!

This newsletter is an important one, so I apologize in advance if it is longer than usual...

Too many of us stubborn fitness pros, myself included, have failed to do what is one of the easiest things to expand the scope of our business:

LOOKING OUTSIDE THE FITNESS INDUSTRY!

I've been way too "boxed in" for too long, and I am embarrassed to admit it.

I finally wisened up this past month and made two big moves that look to help explode my online and offline businesses by looking outside of the same old fitness realm.

To do this, I created coupons on cardstock (decent looking but relatively inexpensive), and printed them at kinkos.

Then they tell me what they are willing to provide, coupons, discounts, samples etc.

I arrange a pickup time and give them the coupons and they give me what they have to offer.

We have already generated a ton of buzz among our cross-promoters that will look to drive more people into our boot camps. For example, "hair man Dan" as he is called, has been showing some of the crazy exercises we do to all of his clients this past wek because he knows that every new client he refers is 25% off on his next boot camp... and he claims that every morning he is liking what he's seeing in the mirror more and more and just loving the workouts!

Also, don't just ask clients for help, ask to help them when you can. For example, one of our long-time boot camp clients finally made it to a workout after missing the first 5 workouts of this phase. I checked in with her before the start of the session to see what was up...

She said she's been struggling to get her new boutique business off and running and it's been very busy and stressful.

I sure as hell know what that's like... man, it's always a challenge, and small businesses need to stick together.

So I reassured her that we would help her out and that she should get some cross-promo material together to throw into our goodie bags. I am also going to send out a newsletter promoting her new biz to my boot camp list.

Why? Because she's a great client and she deserves our help. I am guessing she will have no problem returning the favor, but that's not the main reason why I did it. I did because, no matter how "cheesy" cynical people think it is to help people to better society as a whole, if you show people how much you care they'll go the extra mile for you and your biz, especially when you need it the most... think about it!

My Biggest Failure in Fitness EVER!

Back in December of 2007, I originally came up with the idea to start Workout Muse as my first online business.

I had just purchased several new macs with garage band, so I thought I was going to be able to do do these audio interval training soundtracks myself.

I started messing around with it one day and just couldn't figure out how to do it.

Seconds became minutes and minutes became hours... and I was started to get really frustrated and pissed off.

In the end I spent 4-5 hours trying to build the first TABATAS soundtrack.

Honestly... it was the worst thing I have ever done, ha ha.

The music was some free stuff I got off of podrunner and the timing was WAY off.

So, I said screw it!

The next day I made a post on craig's list in search for a sound designer in the local Milwaukee area (this took 60 seconds).

The next day Topher, my Workout Muse partner and head sound designer, contacted me to set-up a meeting (this took another 60 seconds).

We met 3 days later we met and were a perfect match so we started up Workout Muse (60 minute meeting).

And the rest is history!

- For the first couple weeks of our boot camps, we always perform an elongated warm-up to ensure newbies can properly learn the movements and also to prevent injuries for de-conditioned/beginner trainees.

- We ALWAYS start with Continuous Work each and every phase. It’s the most SIMPLE workout for both instruction and performance purposes. By performing sub-maximal sets, clients can master the foundational body weight exercises in which all future exercise variations will stem from. In addition, this makes it easier for the trainer to get around and coach supervise new clients unfamiliar with or struggling with the movements.

- In the post-workout routine, we focus mostly on self-massage of the following high-priority areas: front and outer hips and thighs and thoracic spine mobilization. We then instruct the clients to reference relevant post-workout videos in our social network for other key corrective stretching and self-massage movements

- Be sure to bring the group together at the end of the workout and stress the importance of Eternal Eating and their Rapid Fat Loss Cardio Program to maximize results. Have your superstar clients vouch for the effectiveness of these program!

Boot Camp Clients LOVE Interval CORE Cardio!

As trainers, we know first hand how much our clients LOVE working the core!

Well, here's a great way to give them what they WANT while still giving them what they NEED!

It's called CORE Cardio:

You will perform all-out maximum effort for 30 s of a cardio exercise (e.g. stationary running, jumping claps, shadow boxing, etc.) followed IMMEDIATELY by 30 s of active recovery by performing a core exercise (e.g. front pillars, upper body twists, leg raises, etc.). You will repeat this 1-minute set up to 10x for 10 total minutes.

Remember, the best way to help your clients lose their guts are total body interval training workouts where you alternate between short all-out bursts of high-intensity effort and active recovery periods.

And by sneaking in extra core work during "active recovery periods" you are cutting their workout time in HALF while still ensuring maximal fat-burning and highly demanded ab work.

We recommend that you use these interval core cardio workouts in the following format:

1.) For when clients need an active recovery day during phases of your boot camps. We usually do this short 10-minute workout then do some corrective self-massage and stretching to regenerate their bodies.

2.) To provide to clients as short 10-minute active recovery workouts during transition weeks between phases of your boot camps so they can maintain their conditioning and get in much needed extra core work.

3.) To integrate into your basic boot camp workouts to switch things up. You can even modify this template the following ways:

- Strength Cardio: 30 s strength movement (push-ups, squats, lunges, etc.) followed by 30 s cardio movement (sprints, jumping claps, burpees, etc.). Perform in same format as prescribed for above.

- Strength Core: 30 s strength movement (push-ups, squats, lunges, etc.) followed by 30 s core movement (mountain climbers, wood choppers, med ball slams, etc.). Perform in same format as prescribed for above.

The EASIEST Hire You'll EVER Make!

It hit me the other day smack-dab in my face:

The best person to hire for to help expand your boot camps is one of your superstar clients.

Like a guy who loses 34 scale lbs in the first month and 70 lbs in first 100 days.

Like a guy who beat himself when he "CHEATED" and had 1.5 cups of berries.

Like a guy who has NEVER missed a workout and wimpers like a puppy in the pool of his own sweat at the end of every boot camp.

Like a guy who goes out of his way to fix the technique of other members of your group and provide motivational words of encouragement to newbies before and after each session.

A guy like Paul Lundh, a member of the SEXY 6 in The Get Sexy Milwaukee Transformation Conest (have you still not done one of these yet? if so you are loco!).

The other day, Paul emailed me this below after I told him to send me a basic resume of what he can offer to my business:

"BJ – Below are some of the things I am responsible for and some of my experience. I haven’t updated my resume in more than 10 years, so if you want something more formal, I will have to work on it.

As I told you on the phone, I really feel motivated and excited about a possible career change. I’ve never been an athlete before and I don’t consider myself one now, but I really enjoy working out and enjoy watching the way you interact with your clients. I think I’d be a great asset to your company.

I’ve done preliminary research and plan to begin studying to get my National Strength and Conditioning Association-Certified Personal Trainer (NSCA-CPT) certification. I don’t ever want to be fat, out-of-shape, and unhealthy again.

As you know, I don’t have a college degree. I joined the Air Force right out of high school, when I was 17 years old. I planned on going to college while I was in the AF, but I met Lisa, I fell in love, we got married, and we started a family at a very young age. I didn’t have the time or money to go to college after having children.

In the AF, I was in logistics; specifically in supply. It wasn’t a glamorous job, but it was a necessary job for the mission of the Air Force. I was involved in ordering parts and supplies for airplanes, vehicles, personnel, etc. After a few years, I became a supervisor and supervised lower-ranking personnel. I was very good at my job and I was always at the top of any military classes I took.

I was also in command of a small, armed, tactical force detailed to secure a large portion of Sembach Air Base in Germany, during Desert Shield/Storm. I loved the camaraderie of the people I met and knew while I was in the AF.

Military enlisted personnel aren’t paid very well, so I took a job as a waiter at the Officers club. After about six months, I was selected to be a night-manager for the Non-Commissioned Officers (NCO). This entailed managing people, bars, restaurants, and nightly entertainment. I also hand to handle customer issues. I was responsible for counting each cashier drawer for accuracy nightly and ensuring the facility was secure before leaving.

I planned to make the AF a career, but I had the opportunity to get out and move home so my children could grow up with their grandparents.

As you know, I currently work for the Department of Veterans Affairs. I’ve been working for them since 1998. When I started, I worked in PC Support, which deals with end user PCs and software issues. Customer service was a huge part of the job.

I was promoted to a programmer position, but programming wasn’t exactly my cup of tea, so I took a networking position. These positions responsibilities included ensuring network connectivity of all PCs, servers, printers, network switches, routers, etc. Manage 40+ network servers.

I was promoted to the Desktop Manager position, which I continue to hold. These positions responsibilities include:

• Serve as the computer expert on project teams that include medical staff, technical specialists, management officials, computer programmers and system vendors.
• Manage one Network administrator, five PC Support maintenance technicians and two helpdesk technicians. Assign work assignments, review performance, and provide technical guidance.
• Identify problems for specific issues in IT areas and create solutions for these IT problems.
• Primary POC for all special IT projects
• Install, test, troubleshoot software and hardware for the medical center including, but not limited to: Windows XP, Apple OSX, Microsoft Office, McAfee Virus protection, Adobe software products, and many other software packages.
• Create user accounts for employees and manage network permissions
• Create user applications using Visual Basic 6

I have about 36 + college credits, I earned from 1998 – 2000. I planned to get my degree in the IT field, but my dad became ill and I stopped going to school because I couldn’t focus and I never went back. I received an A in every class, except for algebra; I received an A- in that class.

I’ve thought about this for a long time and I know I can and will do a first-rate job for you. I want to give back, not only to you, but also to others like Lisa and I that have struggled with weight. I have to be honest with you, I am also thinking about myself. If I become a CPT, I will almost guarantee that I won’t ever go back to the way I was before. I know the journey may not be easy, but I’m up for the challenge."

Talk about the easiest hire of all time.

He knows my training system and nutrition system to a T.

He is already a walking, talking billboard for my biz.

He is essentially a mini-me.

Oh yea, even cooler, my training system is digital so all I need to do is get him the pre-programmed mp3 soundtracks of WORKOUT MUSE and then all he needs to do is press play, coach, and supervise and make BOTH of us a lot of money!

Sure beats those outdated hundred+ page manuals nobody wants to read anyway ;)

Paul is going to be a GREAT addition to my team in the very near future!

The one exception to this idea is with corporate wellness programs. It certainly doesn't make your program look good if you are stealing employees of the companies you train to work for you, ha ha. Trust me, I have already been there, done that with some inquiries of my corporate clients, but you don't want to even tread the gray zone here ;)

The Push-up Boot Camp!

Believe it or not, one of my favorite boot camp exercises is the good old push-up.

Most of your clients have bad memories of endless push-ups in gym class or as punishment conditioning for sports.

These experiences have led them to cast push-ups off to the side as a useless exercise considered to be TOO HARD and TOO BORING!

I know, I know... Your clients HATE push-ups!

Well, I am about to show you a video that will change all of this and make you and your clients a true believer in the endless possibilities of a push-up!

A push-up is the best upper body exercise in existence because it essentially is a total body movement that works the whole front side of your body (and more with some of the more advanced push-up variations we'll demo in the video).

Plus, sometimes it's all about the way you say things to your clients, particularly your female clients who don't care as much about strong upper bodies and flat tummies.

Here is the first thing I say when I introduce push-ups to my groups:

"A push-up is one of the BEST EXERCISES FOR FLAT, SEXY ABS!
Your ability to perform push-ups optimally is directly related to your CORE'S ability to stay tight and stabilize throughout the movement preventing any weak links between your upper and lower body. In other words, do push-ups for 6-pack abs!"

After saying this people seem to forget about their former issues with the push-up.

My personal favorite is the running push-up which really smokes your abs!

Furthermore, what a lot of trainers fail to realize is that true talent is the ability to intensity a movement without adding load AND providing the appropriate progressions and regressions for various fitness levels.

So impress the hell out of your clients during their workouts with the clockwork push-up or the bird dog push-up or the cross-leg push-up. They'll be taking up you and your program to all of their friends in no time!

And make prospects howl while trying the spiderman push-up at a public speaking engagement. 29 Different Push-ups makes for a great demo workout to show how you are different from the competition!

Plus demo Level I, II, and III variations where applicable before each workout so that ALL of your clients can workout at their current fitness level. This is how you bring 1-on-1 training to a group training environment!

Below is a template for a 45-60 minute conference call you can do with a select group of your superstar clients to best leverage the current success of your business. You can use a FREE conference call website like http://www.nocostconference.com or http://www.totallyfreeconferencecalls.com/ to record the call and then provide it as a bonus to your list, throw it on your website for prospects to hear, or sell it as an info product.

I. Intro Yourself and Your Program- 5 minutes

Show your passion and your reputation for results:

- Introduce Yourself: Who you are and what you are all about

- Introduce Your Program: Why you do what you do

- Call Purpose: To spread the health by sharing your client success stories to inspire others to take action

II. Social Proof- 15-20 minutes


Have your clients introduce themselves and tell their stories so that the listener can identify with them:

- Identity: Name, Age, Location

- Past Struggles: What didn’t work!

- Results to Date: weight loss, body fat reduction, dress/pant size reduction, health, lifestyle, etc.

III. Client Promotion of Your Program- 15-20 minutes

Discuss your program and how it works in a conversational format with your clients so that they can casually promote it to the listener for you:

a.) Training System (e.g. Workout Muse)

b.) Nutrition + Supplement System (e.g. Eternal Eating + Prograde)

c.) Unique Features (e.g. social support of a boot camp)

d.) Other Info Products or Affiliates


IV. Call-to-Action- 5 minutes

Show the listener that there is light at the end of the tunnel:

a.) Have your clients speak directly to the listener and challenge them to change by joining your program (“if I can do it, so can you”)

b.) Show how “the students have become the teachers” as your clients pass their wisdom to your prospects


V. Establish Community and Culture Through Client Appreciation- 5 minutes

Show how much love you have for your clients and how strong your relationship with them is:

- Thank them for all their hard work

- Tell them you’ll see them at the next workout (e.g. “it’s gonna be a tough one…”)

- Make inside jokes exclusive to your program (e.g. Paul is known as the sexy man beast)


VI. Contact Info and Plugs- 5 minutes

- Provide your contact info to build relationships with your listeners and show you want to help (e.g. Email me your questions @ workoutmuse@gmail.com, this also can be made into another audio recording in the near future to be added as a bonus or sold).
